NPR Obama Doctrine

Comment on: Does Libya Offer Clues To An Obama Doctrine?at 10/21/2011 9:17 AM EDT
In talking with my fellow conservatives two criticisms emerged;
1. Violation of the WPA
2. "Outsourcing" our FP decisions

Since no President has ever recognized the legality of the WPA, it's not fair to single out President Obama. Regardless, he still violated it (and has again with the deployment to Uganda).

The 'outsourcing' precedent was firmly set by GHWB in the Gulf War. While many celebrated the broad and deep coalition he built, because of that approach 'support from the international community' has now become THE litmus test for the legitimacy of force projection. Without it America is accused of 'going at it alone', 'cowboy diplomacy' and 'violating international law'....regardless of Congressional approval. Maybe even worse, recent events indicate this dynamic encourages the POTUS to seek international approval instead of Congressional approval. The current administration consulted with the UN, the Arab League, NATO and individual countries ahead of our intervention in Libya....but not with Congress. This approach was, and still is, being heralded by many as a new model for US foreign policy.

Regardless, the conservative I know give BHO credit for success in Libya but are cautious on its future.
