I think the gay community is fighting for the wrong solution. Best I can tell the goal is to get the law to recognize gay 'marriage' the same way it currently recognizes 'straight' marriage. The problem team "Gay Marriage" is facing is that too many folks don't want to change the definition of 'marriage'....so stop fighting that battle and focus on winning the war of equality.
Campaign for the government to stop issuing 'marriage' certificates completely, and to start issuing 'unity' certificates (or some other benign sounding document) to everybody, regardless of the sexual combination. 'Unity' certificates would simply replace 'marriage' certificates but carry the same legal characteristics. Concede that 'marriage' is a religious institution and realize that some religions may issue marriage certificates to gay couples while others won't. Keep your eye on the goal - equality - and stop being distracted by battles over emotionally charged phrases like 'gay marriage'. Nobody (well, hardly anybody) is going to fight against 'gay unity'. Those opposing gay marriage can take that battle to their church, if need be. Those favoring gay 'marriage' rights get exactly what they want...equality under the law
